  • Saturn opposite Neptune : All Year
  • Jupiter square Uranus : January - October
  • Jupiter conjunct Pluto : November - December

The following is an examination of the year 2007 based on the major astrological alignments that will assemble during the year. The assessment of alignments is based on the assumption that alignments form archetypal complexes in the collective psyche and given the inherent complexity of each alignment, they cannot be reduced to simple, concrete events. Rather, they are best understood to be schemas or sets of psychological energy which correlate with events, experiences, and occurrences. Although far from complete, the list below highlights the main astrological configurations for 2007.

Jupiter square Uranus (in effect from January through October 2007)
2006 witnessed a trine (or 120 degree aspect) between Jupiter and Uranus. The next logical Ptolemaic aspect to be formed in the cycle of these two planets is the square, which occurs in 2007. The noteworthy significance of the trine and square aspects is the duration of these aspects; due to the retrogradation points in Jupiter's orbit, these aspects last far longer than a typical aspect between Jupiter and Uranus.

Although all Jupiter-Uranus aspects bear witness to cultural creativity, breakthroughs, discoveries, and innovations, the aspect (or angular relationship) between Jupiter and Uranus can give greater specificity to the nature of the ingenuity and creativity of these alignments.

The trine alignment that occurred in 2006 suggests a rather harmonious, effortless, and uncomplicated relationship between the archetypes of Jupiter and Uranus (see past year review for more on this aspect), however the square has a much different dynamic and quality than the trine. Whereas the trine represents a rather effortless unfolding of energies in a cycle of development, a square symbolizes a point of great tension, friction, and dynamic inevitability. Specifically in relation to the creativity of the Jupiter-Uranus cycle, the trine of 2006 symbolized a natural and obvious outgrowth from what preceded it.

However, creativity of a Jupiter-Uranus square has a different characteristic. In this instance, we might invoke the following phrases regarding creativity: "Necessity is the Mother of Invention" and "Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration." Thus, the square aspect between Jupiter and Uranus is liable to be much more of an intense creative process, characterized by contention, discord, and conflict. Though the square tends to be discordant in feel, many of the great creative acts in history are born through crisis, stress, and resistance.

Perhaps the great archetypal image of the Jupiter-Uranus pairing is that of the light bulb, the magic lamp of the industrial age born from the power of electricity (which has been the iconic symbol of bright ideas and ingenious innovations; Thomas Edison was created with inventing the light bulb under a Jupiter-Uranus opposition in 1879). Under a square alignment of Jupiter and Uranus, the "light bulb" of innovation burns with a greater degree of intensity and heat than usual. Perhaps as this alignment unfurls throughout the year, the combination of economic pressures, deadlines, and strains will generate a significant new cultural progression and innovation.

Saturn opposite Neptune (in effect all year)
This alignment, given a ten degree orb of influence, will last from the fall of 2005 through early summer of 2008. A nearly three year alignment, 2007 arguably represents the climax of this configuration as Saturn and Neptune make two direct oppositions during the year, once in late February and again in late June. Although this web site elaborates this alignment and its potentials in some depth (see http://www.astro-noetics.com/sat_nep_1.html and also the past year review section), perhaps a cursory outline of some of its major potentials is in order:

  • A collective sense of loss and mourning.
  • Distortion of reality, or appearances belie actuality.
  • Deep skepticism, cynicism. A disillusionment with that which was once idealized.
  • Environmental problems or a focus on the environment.
  • A darkened collective mood characterized by ennui, fatigue, a mild sense of despair, melancholy, or futility.
  • A literal challenge with invisibles and solvents, such as viruses, poisons, and bacteria.

Any major "axial" alignment (conjunction or opposition) with Saturn and an outer planet is going to define the spirit of the times for at least two years or more. In this instance, although there are significant, concrete corollaries, perhaps the greatest expression of a Saturn-Neptune alignment is a collective existential malaise: a dark, introspective quality that contemplates the imponderables of existence; a "no exit" existential nausea whereby one's subjectivity confronts a cold, colorless, and oppressively drab external condition; a free-floating, general anxiety or fear that has no concrete, external cause but which can grip and seize one; a claustrophobic condition which brings on a heightened sense of loneliness and despair; an anhedonic outlook whereby the world is devoid of any and all inspiring qualities.

Jupiter conjunct Pluto (in effect from late October through December)
As the Saturn-Neptune configuration lessens in quality as the year progresses, a potent conjunction takes place that has an almost diametrically opposite manifestation than the Saturn-Neptune opposition. If the Saturn-Neptune opposition is characterized by an anemic, ascetic and world weary urge for transcendence, a spiritual longing for a heaven or hereafter that is more ideal than this world, then the Jupiter-Pluto configuration is nearly antithetical in quality and tone. Jupiter coupled with Pluto represents life force in triumphant, haughty swagger. The Jupiter-Pluto pairing is Nietzsche's "Will to Power" dressed in royal regalia and regal splendor. With Jupiter and Pluto in pairing, the king of the Gods meets the king of the Underworld, and the results are quite striking.

With this planetary pairing, Jupiter tends to exaggerate, inflate, expand, and liberate the evolutionary life force associated with Pluto. Conversely, Pluto's immense power tends to "hypercathect" Jupiter's tendency towards social elevation, success, and aristocratic resplendence. At its best, Jupiter and Pluto together can manifest as truly magnificent displays of grandeur, majesty, and imposing splendor - art that overpowers, authority that commands, individuals and organizations that triumph and succeed. At its worst, the combination can easily degrade into grandiosity and pomposity, or an arrogance that reeks from an overwrought decadence.

In the closing months of 2007, phenomena congruent with the Jupiter-Pluto archetypal matrix will manifest. This is a "bigger is better" combination in all respects. In art and culture, Jupiter-Pluto alignments tend to correlate with "events" - spectaculars, fanfares, and enormously large-scale events that tend to overpower the senses and sensibilities. In politics, the Jupiter-Pluto aspect is arguably the aspect for displays of political might and power.

The danger with Jupiter-Pluto aspects as they relate to politics is that they tend to correlate with either stunning successes, or conversely, extreme downfalls. In business and economics, the Jupiter-Pluto aspect is a titan's aspect, a captains of industry aspect, and it can correlate with extreme business deals and mega-mergers - anything excessively large and excessively expensive can be an expression of this aspect.
