Halloween Activities For Spiritual Or Psychic Development

    By Helen Leathers

Halloween is said to be the time of year when the veil between this world and the next is the thinnest. I believe it is certainly a time when spirits make themselves known more readily. Some traditions hold that the spirit of departed souls throughout the year don't cross over into the afterlife until Halloween. I don't believe this to strictly be the case. I have seen spirits pass over when they are given the opportunity, whether that is immediately after death or at some point later when the conditions were right and they were able to be guided through.

This takes a certain person, or group of people, and the right energy to help the earthbound spirit, (not to mention knowing they're here and being aware that you can do something about it) there are quite possibly many poor souls who are stuck here that go undetected and not helped. Maybe they are the ones who are able to make the transition at this time of year when contact between the worlds is said to be easier.

I have often seen many spirit beings hanging around, almost as though they are waiting for a bus, in the days leading up to Halloween. So, as an unusual Halloween activity, if you have an unwanted ghost guest in your home, Halloween would be a great time to get some help to move them on.

As an aside, Halloween is a time of endings, so at this time of year it is common to find those who have suffered from illness to pass on from this life in peace.

Other Halloween Activities For Those Developing Their Psychic Abilities

If you are on a path of psychic development this is a great time to work on developing your skills. The energy is brilliant for it, although I would caution against undertaking advanced activities such as trance mediumship or seances for the very first time.

It would be better to do it a couple of times leading up to this period of the year so you get used to it when the energy is less strong. I would certainly not encourage you to get involved with a ouija board or other activities that could be classed as 'parlour games' (such as table tipping) unless these are things you do regularly and you know how to deal with them (good connections with your spirit guides and psychic protection is the key here). These can attract low level entities that can be more mischievous, and in rare cases malevolent. Unless you are experienced and working with a group of trusted friends STAY AWAY FROM THIS WORK AT HALLOWEEN.

You may think I'm being over dramatic, and maybe I am, but better to be safe than sorry. What Halloween activities can you do? Psychometry, dowsing, card readings, and other forms of divination such as scrying, work really well with the energy of Halloween so work on these skills instead.

Getting outside and wrapping up warm with a good old fashioned campfire is an excellent activity for Halloween. It's a good time to meditate or fire gaze. Although I find Halloween energy buzzing (and not exactly relaxing), you can also engage it to help you access spiritual insights, universal laws, and past life experiences.

Halloween Is A Time To Move On For The Living Too

In terms of personal development at Halloween, don't be surprised if long held beliefs are being challenged, or issues are coming to a head. It is a time when relationships end, attachments are severed and new starts are in the air; these may be big or small. This can be challenging but good for all concerned, eventually. Use this energy to banish those bad habits or long-held negative view or thoughts.

If you think that you have some stuff to let go of, even if your heart doesn't want to, why not try the following exercise (or perhaps it is a modern Halloween ritual):

  • Write down what it is that you think you would like to be rid of.
  • Make a list of reasons to get rid of it, then make a list of reasons to keep it. You may be misjudging what it is that you really want. Remember though it is not the number of things on the list that counts; this is just a way of clarifying things for you, and one big reason could very well outweigh four or five smaller ones!
  • Now ask yourself, 'Do I want this to be a part of my life right now?'
  • If the answer is 'yes', then that's fine. But you might want to reassess things in a few months jut to be sure.
  • If the answer is 'no', then you will probably want to do something about it. Make a plan. It doesn't have to be huge, just one or two steps that will get you on track to eliminating the 'thing' you no longer want. Then gather up the lists and get rid of them. Try shredding, tearing or burning them. As you do, think about shedding the thing that you no longer want in your life. Afterwards have a shower or bath and let all thoughts of the 'thing' be washed away down the drain.

(I think burning is the best thing to do at Halloween, if you can. It gives this process an air of importance and ritual and speaks strongly to your subconscious mind and encourages the process of letting go.)

Be positive and strive to make positive changes. Don't dwell on the 'giving up' or 'letting go'. And don't beat yourself up if you slip into old ways, just reassert your wish to let go of the 'thing' and take each day as it comes. Because each moment of your life is 'now', by focusing on doing something now, you practise doing it in each moment of your life.

One other Halloween activity you should definitely do is to get dressed up and have some fun. It really is a time of spiritual significance but most of our traditional pagan festivals were about coming together as families and communities, having a party and feasting. So to keep with tradition and ensure you have some fun in your life, it would be rude to ignore this element of Halloween.
